World Hearts & Keyblades

Light and Dark Keyblades are considered to be placed under one category, the Keyblades of Worlds' Hearts. This ultimately means that when you're not too busy bashing away at Dusks and Shadows, you can participate in the defense of worlds against Heartless Invasions.

Light Keyblade Wielders are generally the ones that participate in the defense against an Invasion, alongside Regulars and whoever else decides to defend against the Heartless, and play a very important role. While Regulars are more important and more numerous, the Keyblade Wielders are the ones that can prevent the world's destruction.

Their goal is to find and lock the keyhole before the Heartless reach it. By doing so, worlds will be immune to Heartless destruction for a week. Afterwords, the World Heart will be unlocked again. Performing this does not prevent travel and thus the Heartless can still swarm the world in question, but they cannot destroy it for that timeframe.

Dark Keyblade Wielders have a choice, really. They can do the same as Light Keyblade Wielders can, and can lock away World Hearts. However, they can also unlock World Hearts again against the week-long timer, opening that world up to invasion once more. This allows Dark Keyblade Wielders to be a valuable asset to Seekers of Darkness and other Heartless masters, and also allows the person in question to be quite the manipulative one.

Of course Light Keyblade Wielders can do the same as well, but there's usually not much reason for them to unlock a World Heart. Bear in mind, however, that a Dark Keyblade Wielder can only unlock a World Heart, after it was previously locked, once per week. This is largely to prevent things from devolving into a tug of war.
