The Keyblades
As you're probably well aware of by now, there are three types of Keyblades. Light Keyblades, Dark Keyblades, which are Keyblades of world's hearts, and the Keyblades of People's Hearts.
Now, the keyblades function as normally as you'd expect, except for two details in particular:
Keyblades as Blades do not hit like a truck. In fact, they all hit like a normal sword would, not very hard, not very powerful, but still a viable weapon. This is how we're generally balancing the Keyblades so as to make Regulars, Nobodies, and Heartless a rather significant threat with or without a Keyblade wielder nearby. Ultima Keyblades and Tier 3 Keyblades of course hit harder, but not by an ungodly margin. You won't be one-shotting shadows or dealing extraordinary damage with a keyblade combo technique like Ars Arcanum.
The Keyblades Guard that surround the handles are magic, not physical this time. This is to allow for actual sword styles to be more effective while the top of the guard still protects the user's hand. So attempting to use the keyblades rather inefficient guard against the user would be pointless. How the handle is magic is left up to you, you could have the guard fade away in combat, leaving the top of the guard, or your hand could just phase through the guard. Whatever seems reasonable, if you were to even write for it at all.
